Game-Ready Locomotive (Reference-Driven Texturing)
4 Texture Sets, 3 weathering levels.
A study in believable PBR surfacing for a large vehicle, using a curated reference board and material sampling to guide color, roughness and wear.
Goal:
Tell a service history through materials: faded industrial paint, soot around fans, rainwash under grilles, chipped steps, polished handrails, and layered bogie dirt.
Workflow:
1) Model/UV: clean low-poly, unique unwrap on hero panels; real-world scale & balanced texel density.
2) Bakes: Normal/AO/Curvature (cage-controlled) to preserve panel breaks and rivets.
3) Texturing (Substance 3D Painter): base paint → primer → steel; anchor-point masks + hand-paint for chips, streaks and edge burnish; decal materials for markings; vertex-masking for dirt intensity.
4) Shading: single master material with instances; ORM pack (AO/Roughness/Metallic). Tuned roughness ranges so walkways read matte while steel edges catch spec.
Texture callouts:
1) Roof: sun-bleached paint + soot rings around fans.
2) Sides: panel-to-panel value shifts, rivet halo dirt, vertical rain streaks by fasteners.
3)Trucks & coupler: oxide/brake dust/oil stacking; rubber hoses with softer spec.
4)Steps/rails: anti-slip roughness breakup and contact-polish.
Deliverables:
4K PBR set (BaseColor, Normal, ORM) + presentation renders. Wireframe, UV layout and bake previews included in the gallery.
